I regret to report that the Old Cooksborough cemetery is very nearly on its last legs. When these photographs were taken in June of 1991, access to this old graveyard was difficult enough. Briars, trash growth trees and thick underbrush made walking through it difficult at that point. Now, due to an additional thirteen years of neglect, the cemetery cannot be seen from Cooksborough Road nor can it be accessed from the side road. Due to liability issues, the people who live in the old Cooksborough School will no longer allow visitors to cross their property to visit the cemetery. The vegetation is now so thick that major clearing, rehabilitation and restoration work must be done soon before the damage gets any worse. Shame on the Town of  Pittstown, Rensselaer Co., NY for allowing the small graveyards within their jurisdiction to deteriorate to this extent! From what I have been told, the Pittstown town fathers have relied for many years on the patriotism and goodwill of cemetery neighbors and interested organizations like the Boy Scouts to provide needed maintenance and restoration services. Without the work of these wonderful people, things would surely be in a much worse state. Unfortunately, the people who have the closest ties to the area are aging and many are deceased. Their sons and daughters have moved away from the area.
It has also recently come to my attention that the 1929 DAR transcription, which has served as sort of a standard reference for this cemetery for many years, is in no way complete. The cemetery is a much more sizeable one, extending southward behind the homes on the east side of Cooksborough Road. Due to the extent of the overgrowth, this part of the cemetery was not accessible in 1991.
There are twelve identified Revolutionary War Patriots and a War of 1812 officer buried in the OldCooksboroughCemetery. This transcription is the best way I know to make sure they are not forgotten.
