York Genealogical and Biographical Society.
In the Autumn of 1643, two New England men, Rev. Robert Fordham
and John Carman, with families, crossed Long Island Sound from the New
Haven Colony, to Nassau Island, which was then a territory under Dutch
control, but which today is known as Long Island in State of New York.
These men were advance agents of a new emigration representing a group
who had settled in Stamford, Connecticut, only five years earlier, but
were now seeking homes in a land where they might enjoy greater political
and religious liberty. That year they secured from the Sachems, the native
tribes of Indians, a quit-claim deed for a section of land on the south
shore of Long Island, now part of the Town of Hempstead. Near the present
village of Merrick they made their homes and spent their first winter.
The next summer a considerable number of the Stamford families came
across the Sound, scattering themselves and their farms throughout the
territory which, in the archives received the name of "Heemstede."
In the autumn of 1644 these settlers, recognizing the sovereignty of
the Dutch, secured from Governor William Kieft of Manhattan, a grant of
a larger and more clearly defined territory, extending from Long Island
Sound to the Atlantic Ocean, being about sixteen miles in length.
As the men of this new settlement had previously been associated together
at Stamford, they now worked together in harmony, and quickly completed
their new plans. Their farms scattered over the large township, because
they were mostly raisers of cattle . But, in a central place a "Town spot,
was located, where a "Fort" or palisade was constructed for protection
against the Indians. Enclosed within the "Fort" was built a “meeting house,"
which thereafter was used on Sundays as a place of worship, and at other
times, when needed, for Town Meetings and public business. This Fort, occupying
a space of about six acres, was in the center of the modern village of
Hempstead, on the east side of Main Street, extending from Fulton to Front
Streets.
On a corner north of and across Fulton Street, was located the Town's
first Inn or Tavern, with an ample farm attached, which for two and a half
centuries continued under the management of landlords of the names of Smith
and Sammis. It was just east of this Tavern Farm that the early settlers
set apart, out of the Common Lands of the Town, a Burial Ground which for
many years was the common burial place of all the Hempstead families. The
first book of Town Records of Hempstead, which came to be known as the
"mouse eaten book", contained much detail, and many interesting facts relating
to the first fourteen years of the Town's history. This book has been lost.
The latest occasion of its being used and quoted from was about one hundred
years ago, when a lawsuit between the North, and South sections of the
divided Town of Hempstead was carried on appeal, up to the highest Court
of the State, to settle the ownership of, and rights to, the Swamp lands
on the South side. The evidence produced in this case showed that in 1647,
three years after the Dutch charter was granted, there were sixty-seven
families settled within the boundaries of the town. Within five years,
the one hundred families required by the Dutch charter had been exceeded.
Although the record of the beginnings of the Fort, the Meeting House,
the Tavern and the Burial- ground, are lost with disappearance of the "mouse
eaten book," the earliest remaining book of records tells of them as accomplished
facts. Under date of May 4, 1670, we find "It is ordered by the Constable
and Overseers, that Simon Sering is to look to the burying place, and take
the fines according as it is ordered for creatures they shall at any time
find there, four pence a sheep, and twelve a hors and all other cattle,
and six pence a swine." The method of protecting God's Acre seems later
to have changed. The record of the Town Meeting held April 1, 1740, says:
-"Att ye same Town Meeting was ordered that Jerimian Bedle, Richard Bedle:
Elias Dorland and John Dorland was to take care and fence ye Burial Ground
lott, and to be paid out of ye Towns money by ye Trustees for their service."
There were doubtless many interments in this ancient burying ground
from the very beginning; but for a long time there seem to have been no
inscribed stones or markers to identify the graves. The earliest stone
found there twenty years ago, when the village authorities decided to convert
the overcrowded and neglected space into a Public Park, and gave it the
name of "Fulton Field," was a rough field stone bearing the roughly traced
initials and date "R.S. I711." There were about two dozen similar rough
and primitive markers. This lack of early memorial stones may be accounted
for, doubtless, by the great difficulty and expense of obtaining cut stones.
There are no quarries, or supplies of native stone upon Long Island. Of
the markers brought from abroad, many have been destroyed. The action of
the frost has wholly chipped off the face, of many a sandstone monument,
and the lettering on many a weather-beaten stone is indistinct. When soldiers
of the British army, during the Revolutionary War, were stationed at Hempstead,
and occupied the adjoining Presbyterian Meeting House for a riding school,
it is said that many stones were used by them for making ovens, and the
bread baked therein was marked with the name and record of one of Hempstead's
departed townsmen. While we now have the record of only a portion of the
graves in this old yard, it seems probable that at least two thousand of
the earlier men, women and children of this town were laid to rest there.
The title to this portion of the "common lands" ever remained in the
Town of Hempstead, and it was for burial purposes only that plots were
apportioned to the different families of the Town. When it was decided
to convert this ground into a public park, a careful record was made from
each gravestone, which is preserved in the office of the Village Clerk,
together with a map on which is indicated by number the location of each
grave. Each stone was then buried over the body of the person of whom it
was a memorial, and paths and benches were 'arranged upon the graded and
swarded acres.
Four times have there been made extensions to the old Town Burial Ground,
through private enterprise. By a deed dated April 22, 1766, Nehemiah Sammis,
the Inn-keeper and owner of the adjoining farm on the West, conveyed to
the "Deacon's and Elders of the Presbyterian Church, a plot of: land fronting
on the Northerly side of Fulton Avenue where the present Church. building
is located their third structure on that site. At about the time when the
Church was located there, Mr. Sammis commenced selling plots in the rear
thereof for burial purposes. This would. indicate that the ground set apart
by the Town had been fully apportioned.
Two more additions were made on the Westerly side, when in 1837, and
again in 1844, the Trustees of the Presbyterian Church purchased from Henry
Sammis, the son of Nehemiah, additional land extending to the present tracks
and terminal of the Long Island Railroad. Ninety plots were laid out and
sold for burial purposes.
The fourth and final extension was made on the Easterly side in the
year 1847, when Benjamin Rushmore, owner of the adjoining land, prepared
a map of one hundred and forty-four plots which were rapidly sold to Hempstead
families. This was called "The New Cemetery of Benjamin Rushmore in the,
Village of Hempstead." Still further East, fronting on Fulton Avenue, was
the newly located Manse of the Presbyterian Church. In 1922, the grave-stones
in the Rushmore section were also buried beneath the sod, by the Village
authorities, forming an addition to Fulton Field.
There has been no interments in any of these grounds for many years.
In later years, however, many bodies were removed from these unincorporated
and neglected grounds to the more modern "Greenfield Cemetery" a mile or
so South of Hempstead village.
Here follows the record of five hundred and forty-four inscriptions
from stones in the old Town Burial Ground, as made by Thomas V. Smith,
C. E., at the time the stones were buried in each grave. In some cases
his record has been amplified by a comparison with copies of the inscriptions
made at an earlier date.
INSCRIPTIONS FROM HEMPSTEAD'S OLD TOWN BURIAL GROUND.
The graves in the Old Town Burial Ground are numbered consecutively
from 1 to 543, beginning on the westerly side, and extending, in twenty-
one lines, from Fulton Avenue northerly as is indicated upon the map which
Engineer Smith has filed in the office of the Village Clerk of Hempstead.
While adopting an alphabetical order in this list, for the convenience
of reference, we have retained at the left hand side the number of each
grave, so that its location may be readily determined by a reference to
the map. Some of these graves, which are indicated by a *, appear not to
lie within the boundary of the Old Town Burial Ground, but are in the Sammis
section instead. The stones marking these graves had not yet been buried,
in May, 1923.
To a few of the inscriptions in the foregoing list have been added
memoranda from the Surrogate's office, showing the dates of probate and
the places of record of the wills of the deceased persons. Much interesting
family history may be gathered from these wills.

INSCRIPTIONS FROM HEMPSTEAD'S OLD TOWN BURYING GROUND. CONTRIBUTED
By JOHN DEAN FISH, 36 Greenwich Street, Hempstead, NY. Corresponding Member
of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society.
(Continued from Vol. LV, P. 77, of the Record).
PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH ADDITION.
As one enters the village of Hempstead on a Long Island Railroad
train, and nears the station, he sees lying close by at his left hand,
a collection of memorial stones which mark the graves of Hempstead's
residents of two generations ago. He sees also, nearby, the historical
Presbyterian Church, and beyond it the village park "Fulton Field," which
was the original burial place of the dead of the early settlers of 1644.
In the year 1837, and again in 1846, the officers of the Presbyterian Church
acquired, from the Sammis estate, land adjoining the Church and the existing
burial ground. The Fulton Street front of this
purchase was used for the erection of a building for their Sunday School
and for the horse-sheds which, in days before the automobile, were a necessary
feature of every country church. The remainder of the land was laid out
in about ninety plots for burial purposes, which were rapidly disposed
of to local families. The inscriptions which follow will indicate how rapidly
these lots came into use., After Greenfield
Cemetery, south of Hempstead village was incorporated, these old grounds
became more and more unused and neglected, and. during the last score,
of years there have been no interments in the village center. Doubtless
these remaining burial grounds will soon lose their mortuary appearance
by the burial of the memorialstones in each grave, and the addition of
another area to the already formed "Fulton Field."

Forest Park Cemetery was listed by Life magazine as one of the Top Ten most haunted places in the United States.
Forest Park Cemetery is located in the town
of Brunswick, New York. It has long been a place of desolation and abandonment
although current attempts are being made to raise money to restore this
historical site. Much of the documentation has been lost for this cemetery
including the architectural plans for the only remaining, standing structure,
the receiving tomb.
Forest Park Cemetery was first incorporated
by a group of wealthy Troy citizens in 1897. The area chosen occupied 200
acres of gently rolling hills, several natural streams and a small pre-existing
graveyard. This acreage spanned all the way from Brunswick Road to its
current location on Pinewood Avenue (this location has led to the misnomer
of calling it Pinewood Cemetery). The first thing the incorporation did
was to install drainage pipes to the spring and wet areas, some of which
are broken or plugged today. The original goal of these citizens was to
create a cemetery and park the likes of which would rival Troy's historic
Oakwood. A beautiful landscape has been done of the proposed layout and
can be found in the Brunswick Historical Society in Eagle Mills. Unfortunately
these aspirations were not to be fulfilled. The incorporation spent large
amounts of money on the drainage systems, photographs, a few of the formal
gardens, the beautiful receiving tomb which today lies in ruin, and the
architect who planed the site. The original layout for the landscaping
was designed by Garnet Baltimore, the first black graduate of Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute (R.P.I.).
In 1914 the original incorporation went bankrupt.
However, it was re-incorporated by investors from New York City and Chicago
under the name Forest Hills in 1918. This incorporation soon also went
bankrupt in the 1930's. Despite the re-incorporation, little of the original
plan was ever carried out, the receiving tomb, designed by a still existing
(at least it was 5 years ago) company called Temple Brother located in
Vermont, was built and some graves were sold but none of the fountains
or pools were ever built. The cemetery now only occupies 22 acres, although
one can scarcely see the boundaries through the weeds. The central focus
point of the cemetery was to be the receiving tomb which was constructed
and still stands, although much of it has been destroyed. The glass dome
is gone and the roof removed, as well as the marble wall coverings. Graffiti
covers the walls and although some attempts have been made to clean it
up a bit, it was not done by professionals. As a result, much of this historic
monument has been ravaged.
Despite its current condition however, the
tomb still has a commanding presence. The design is an architectural cross
between the designs of Romanesque, Classicist, and Sullivanism, the structure
has an emphasis on mass and proportion not specific details. As is typical
of the Romanesque style, there is a focus on the rough, monochromatic masonry
that stresses the edges with quoins of smooth masonry. Also typical of
this architecture are the massive arches of the entry way and "fake" windows
which draw your attention upward. The classicist influence can be seen
in the bilateral symmetry and the triangular pediment on the porte cochere
and also within the glass dome although it no longer exists. The sparse
detailing found on the masonry frieze is typical of Sullivan in the organic
nature of its leaf and flower pattern. The styles are consistent with the
time period of 1897, a time when Romanesque was loosing the battle of fashion
against classicist influence.
The design of this tomb was meant to portray
a sense of permanence, order, and eternal control. It was hoped that this
would assure people that it would last forever. Sadly, this faith was unfounded.
The grounds are overgrown, vandalized, and forgotten. A vivid reminder
of how societies views toward death have changed. Instead of revering death
we now consider it an inconvenience, sticking burial places far from the
people. No longer are cemeteries designed to be beautiful places to go
and honor those who came before, but around the lawn mover and the weed-whacker.
Many places do not even allow the planting of flowers but instead leave
places for plastic stems and fiber petals to sit and soil with time.
Most local residents don't know many details
about the cemetery, or prefer to remain silent when asked about them, but
there may be some truth to the rumors if Life magazine felt strongly enough
to list old Forest Park as one of the Top Ten most haunted places in the
United States. No actual ghost sightings have occured there (or have they?),
although stories of bleeding statues and crying babies are well known.
An interesting story sighted in the Troy Record
(Oct.27,1996, pp.E1,4) tells of a couple who "parked" :) in the cemetery
in the 1940's or 50's. The man got out of the car to investigate a strange
noise, and a little while later the woman heard scraping on the roof of
the car. Police arrived at the scene and told the girl to get out of the
car and run, and not to look back. Of course she did, only to see that
the scraping sound was coming from her companion's feet scraping against
the roof of the car. He had been dangling from a tree above.
Another story (although it's one that has
been told in many towns), is that of the vanishing hitchhiker. According
to the same Troy Record article, a Troy taxi cab driver told this story
to Avril Park historian Judy Rowe. It is the tale of a young girl dressed
in party clothes whom he picked up at Emma Willard School one night. She
needed a ride home and directed the cabbie up Pinewoods Avenue, but upon
reaching Forest Park Cemetery, the young girl vanished.
