Genealogy Online's Data Base
Try Genealogy Online's Data base of online records. Access to the Events Database is absolutely free and can be viewed by anyone on the Net, around the world. There is no charge to submit data and no charge to retrieve it and gain contact information. All entries are arranged by Soundex of the last name and searches by Soundex will yield a list of all names matching the Soundex code. This feature becomes especially helpful when a Soundex code covers names that are mostly related, such as P330, which includes Pettit, Poteete and Petet. However, it also means that Steward and Struthers are found together. An exact match option has been added to remedy that problem. Searches can be conducted by last name only or by first and last name. Wildcards can not be included. You do not need to create an account to browse and retrieve data.
The Genealogy Online GEDCOM collection had about 3 million names as of 3/98. Access is free. There is no search engine; index files must be downloaded and searched manually.
Additional Linked pedigree databases:
(Ancestral File) - It is estimated that as of December 1997 the AF contained approximately 29 million names having grown by approximately 1.5% monthly during the previous eight years. Ancestral File is available for free in about two thousand Family History Centers of the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) through out the world. Unfortunately it is not Web-accessible.New from the LDS - Vital records index for the US/Canada, British Isles and Australia recently became available from the LDS. Each geographic area is on a separate set of cd's and costs about $15-20 per set. There are 4 to 5 CDs in each set containing marriages, christenings and non-LDS baptisms. There are about 4-5 million records on the US/Canada set alone. These names were extracted from original records with the name and location of the original record given. You can search by state, or by the whole US and Canada. After retrieving the name, check the original source/ record from which the name was extracted. Don't expect miracles this is really only a portion of names from all of all the people who lived in the US and Canada from 1631 to 1888, but it is another source. There are no disks currently formatted for Mac, and the LDS has no plan to create them. New cd's are to be released periodically. The cds can be purchased from the LDS Distribution Center by phone using a credit card. The toll-free number for distribution center outside of Utah is 1-800-537-5950.

RootsWeb- RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative. The Internet's Oldest and Largest Genealogy Site RootsWeb's own genealogy runs back more than a decade to the days of net.roots. RootsWeb folks have been involved since the early days of ROOTS-L and the Roots Surname List, and more recently were among the founders of the RAND Genealogy Club. We created the RootsWeb site to continue to support the genealogical community as the needs of the community outstripped the ability of RAND and other organizations to host the genealogical community on a guest basis.
